H. F. HEGAN - Weatherford, (Texas) Feb. 15th - Who has for five years lived in Weatherford, was shot and killed with a pistol last night in the hands of Merrill A. Parks, a piano player at the Star Saloon, this city. From evidence before the jury of inquest, it appears that there had been some offense given to a little brother, 10 years old, of Parks, who, with his father, was visiting here. Some words passed and Hegan left the Star saloon and went to the saloon of Joseph Laing, where he was followed by Merrill Parks. Hegan hastily went out, followed by Parks, and the latter fired. Hegan fell, shot through the body from the back and died without a word. Both were under the influence of liquor. Parks was arrested. Hegan was about 45 years old, and has a wife and four children, that he left in Chicago six years ago. His wife is a sister to Judge Garrett of Chicago. She refused to live with her husband on account of his intemperance. Parks had only been here four days, coming from Denison, and has a wife. --The Weekly Enquirer, Feb. 17, 1883, McKinney, Texas [Note: This person is Frank H. Hagan, who left his family in Chicago.
