There are many organizations working to document graves, including the USGenWeb Tombstone Project. Most notably, Find-A-Grave (FAG) has a lot to offer, including some burial listings, photos, obituaries, and family ties.
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency offers extensive information and services about preserving cemeteries.
